MFL (French) at Barcombe C E Primary

Intent

At Barcombe C E Primary, we believe that the skills, knowledge and understanding gained through learning a new language make a major contribution to the development of children’s oracy and literacy. It is also a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures.  Our MFL Curriculum is designed with the intent of developing an interest in, and thirst for, learning other languages. Our intent is to introduce the learning of the French language, and the understanding of its culture, in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to embed the essential skills of listening, speaking and reading, and to build the children’s ‘culture capital’ so that they are aware of differences between cultures. In short, we hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.

Implementation

A variety of language teaching methods are used to suit children with different learning styles. These include games, role-play, and the use of a range of media and songs. The lessons are made as entertaining and enjoyable as possible as we realise that this approach serves to develop a positive attitude in the children to the learning of modern foreign languages. We have available a scheme which pronounces the key vocabulary ensuring all staff, regardless of fluency, are able to model the language correctly.

Impact

Subject and school leaders monitor the impact of our curriculum provision in a variety of ways to ensure that, by the time they leave KS2, they have a firm foundation ready for KS3.   These methods include

  •        Observing children speaking and listening in another language.
  •        Images and videos of children completing speaking and listening activities.
  •        Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice).
  •        Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum to parents.
  •        Learning walks.
  •        Subject tracking.
